FLAT ROCK SPEEDWAY THROWBACK THURSDAY

A popular trend among social networking sites is Throwback Thursday, reminding us of some popular memory from the past. In recognition of Throwback Thursday, FlatRockSpeedway.com will feature a “Blast From The Past” each week.

FLAT ROCK #1

Flat Rock Speedway, built by Sheldon Hayes Sr. in 1952-53, was promoted by various entities and individuals from 1953-1961 prior to John Marcum and his MARC/ARCA organization taking over in 1962. One of the early promoters at Flat Rock was Bill France Michigan, Inc., owned by NASCAR founder Bill France Sr. All the races France promoted were in the 1950s and were sanctioned by NASCAR. Among them was the Flat Rock 500, a 500-lap race on the quarter mile. Many of NASCAR’s top driving stars of that time appeared at Flat Rock including Lee Petty, Curtis Turner, Tiger Tom Pistone, Glen Wood and Joe Weatherly.
