Remembering Tom Studt

Tom “Tommy” Studt, who drove to 10 feature wins and four consecutive top-5 points finishes in the ARCA Figure-8 division at Flat Rock Speedway in the 1980s, passed away on Sunday May 12 at Detroit Medical Center Huron Valley Sinai Hospital after experiencing complications from a scheduled surgical procedure. He was 65.

Studt, whose brother Bob Studt is the all-time winningest driver in the history of the ARCA Figure-8 division, was one of three brothers—Bob, Tom and Dan—to race in the division. Tommy Studt drove ARCA Figure-8s numbered 33 to top-5 points finishes in 1983 through 1986, and he was championship runnerup to Bob Studt in 1984.

Tom’s nephew Greg Studt, whose car #33 is the same as Tom Studt ran, is the only driver to win championships in all three ARCA divisions at Flat Rock—Late Model, Street Stock and Figure-8.

Tom Studt was a self-employed mechanic specializing in marine maintenance and repair and resided in Highland Township, Michigan, west of Pontiac. He is survived by three children; grandchildren; brothers Bob, Dan and Jimmy; and sisters Lois and Linda. Services are pending.
