FLAT ROCK CHAMPS TO BE CROWNED SATURDAY
FLAT ROCK CHAMPS TO BE CROWNED SATURDAY
Flat Rock, MI: A group of drivers have their sights set on a 2018 ARCA Flat Rock Speedway track title, and it all comes down to the Motor City Battery/Harris Mechanical Season Championships this Saturday night, August 18. The ARCA Moran Chevrolet Late Models, ARCA Victory Lane Quick Oil Change Figure 8’s and both the A and B divisions of the ARCA DTS Drive Train Specialists Street Stocks will determine their respective champions for the 2018 season.
Jimmy Thiel is looking to lock up the ARCA Moran Chevrolet Late Model title, which would be the first of his career. Thiel grew up at the speedway and began his career at “The Rock”. Jimmy finished third last season in the final points and has 1 win to his credit in 2018. Paul Pelletier, Craig Everage, Frank Jiovani and Stan Yee Jr. trail the leader going into Saturday’s action.
Bonus money is also up for grabs in the Late Models, courtesy of Moran Chevrolet. The winner will take home an additional $300, $200 for second and $100 for third.
Could it be a 4-peat of championships for second-generation driver Billy Earley? Billy’s 165 point edge over Dennis Whisman puts him in the “driver’s seat” to accomplish that feat this Saturday night for the 2018 ARCA Victory Lane Quick Oil Change Figure 8 championship bout. The title would put Earley behind only Denny Pace and Bob Studt in consecutive championships, with each driver having 5 in a row on their resumes.
Earley shared the title with Whisman in 2009 and captured the 2015, 2016 and 2017 crowns out-right. Billy has 2 feature wins to his credit this season. Dennis Whisman Jr., Eugene Worden and Jeremy Miller round out the top 5 with 1 point race to go. The feature race will be 25 laps Saturday.
The hottest battle puts defending champ Ray Morneau Jr. and Grant Hedges in a tie going into Saturday’s ARCA DTS Drive Train Specialists Street Stock A Main championship. Ray has stayed at or near the top most of the season, but a late surge by Hedges now has him even with the champ. Jeff Metdepenningen, Greg Studt and Clarity Patton complete the top 5 in points as the final point race looms. A 30 lap feature is on tap for the A Main.
Another driver looking for his first title is Ian Jezylo in the Street Stock B Main chase. Ian leads rookie L.J. Farmer by 155 markers going into Saturday. Ian’s son, Adam, won the 2017 B Main championship. 3-time B champ Rich Abel is third, Anthony Camilli fourth and James Pankow fifth in the current points for the division. The B Cars will go 20 laps in their feature race Saturday.
Practice begins at 4, time trials are at 5:30 and show time is 7 p.m. August 18. All tickets will go on sale race day at 4 p.m. There is no advance sale for this event.
