Flat Rock Explains: What is Legends Car Racing?
May 30, 2024 -- This Saturday at Flat Rock Speedway, the Great Lakes Legend Series will make a return to Metro Detroit as a part of the Flat Rock Grand Prix at Flat Rock Speedway Jack's Bicycle Scout Night.
This Canadian touring series tests drivers on the dirt, asphalt, and road courses across Ontario, and for the second time, Michigan.
The Great Lakes Legends Series is a member of INEX, a worldwide sanctioning body based in Charlotte which stands for “Inexpensive Racing”. This series, developed in 1995, is focused on low-cost racing solutions, providing those in the motorsports industry a chance to get a jumping point for a future in motorsport in contrast to more expensive options. INEX annually sanctions more than 2,500 races at more than 300 different tracks throughout the world.
Legends Racing is one of the most prominent forms of racing in INEX, as this form of racing is primarily designed to promote two facets - exciting racing, and low costs.
These cars are powered by motorcycle engines and are traditionally 5/8 scale models of production cars from the 1930’s and 1940’s, most often the Ford Coupe 1934 and 1935. It's in these cars that the Great Lakes Legends Series thrives, and where a number of NASCAR’s most famous stars got their start.
The alumni list of former Legends Car features recognizable stars as far as the eye can see. From the Busch brothers to Dale Earnhardt Jr, Joey Logano and Chase Elliott, Legends car racing has become a part of the journey for many. Six of the last seven NASCAR Cup Series champions (2017-2023) have, at one point, raced a Legends car.
